Why Go Green?
These days consumers are becoming more interested in the process rather than the product. The benefits of “green” beauty products extend beyond trends — increasing studies show the toxicity of conventional cosmetics, and the natural cosmetics market continues to grow rapidly and consistently.
Three major attractions to green skincare/cosmetics include increased effectiveness, long-term health, and environmental responsibility.
The good news is, safe alternatives are available and there are steps you can take to detox and reduce toxic exposure on your skin and in your body.
The benefits?

Less Chance Of Reactions Caused By Harsh Chemicals
People with sensitive skin will know how easily irritated it is, and products with chemicals and other strange ingredients in them such as Benzoyl Peroxide (used to treat acne) often leave skin feeling dry, red, and sore. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), fragrance is the biggest cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis. It’s up there with nickel and poison ivy, which most people know how to avoid. Fragrance is the only ingredient that’s allowed to hide under a cloud of rose petals and doesn’t have to say what it really is which makes figuring out exactly what you’re allergic or sensitive to very difficult.

Save the Animals
More brands than you think are testing on animals, you might be shocked to find familiar companies, companies you thought you could trust like Aveeno, Garnier, Olay, Neutrogena are still involved in this horrible practice. In the United States alone, more than 100 million animals are tortured and killed each year for animal testing. There’s nothing that justifies animal testing in the 21st century. It’s a cruel and outdated practice that’s not only unethical but also unnecessary.

Your Skin Will Be Grateful
What you put on your body is just as significant as what you put in your body. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and since it’s porous, it absorbs whatever you put on it. There's no bodily function for eliminating potential toxins so where does it go once it’s absorbed into the body? Many times the build-up of this chemical soup can lead to a distressing variety of health issues. Not surprisingly, the higher the temperature, the longer the exposure, the easiest access to your bloodstream (like on your scalp, face, and underarms), and the more surface area covered, the higher the absorption rate through your skin layers and into your circulation. Depending on what you are putting on your skin, this could be beneficial...or very detrimental.

Protects & Preserves Our Environment
Using natural and organic products in much better for the environment. Skincare products that contain chemicals can have a very damaging impact on the environment, sprays and perfumes that are released into the atmosphere can be very harmful, as well as the manufacturing process that takes place to create them. If you use natural and organic skincare products not only will you reap the benefits of beautiful skin, but also can enjoy them guilt-free without harming the environment.

Overall Health & Wellbeing
US federal government doesn’t require health studies or pre-market testing on personal care products. Manufacturers are free to put just about anything they want into cosmetics—a far-reaching category used by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to include everything from make-up and deodorant to lotions and mouthwashes. EWG found ingredients certified by the US government as “known or probable carcinogens” in one of every 120 cosmetic products on the market, including shampoos, lotions, makeup foundations, and lip balm. What this adds up to is that “one of every 13 women and one of every 23 men are exposed to ingredients that are known or probable human carcinogens every day through their use of personal care products.” You can help yourself by being suspicious of labels, don’t just read “natural” or “hypoallergenic” and feel confident. Those labels are oftentimes meaningless, the FDA has no control over the labels.

For Your Kids & Family’s Health
There’s nothing quite like a newborn baby’s skin. The sweet smell, the perfect softness—it’s intoxicating! But all that sweetness and softness means that babies and kids usually have extra sensitive skin. Skin that you can’t put just anything on. Switching from conventional to natural personal care products means you lessen the chances of your kids’ skin getting irritated and having an adverse reaction. The same goes for the adults! Even if you think you don’t have particularly sensitive skin, transitioning to natural products could make you realize you do. You just didn’t realize the impact harsh conventional products were having.

Better Smells
Have you ever got a whiff of someone’s perfume and instantly got a headache or after a long day of deep cleaning you get a migraine? What’s inside your products that create the aroma? Scientists suggest that while perfumes can be extremely pleasant, they can cause a person's blood vessels to swell and dilate, and, in turn, stimulate the nerve system in the brain associated with head pain. Similarly, some beauty/cleaning products have odors that may activate certain nerve receptors in the nasal passages that may trigger a migraine attack or make worse ones that already started. All-natural and organic products will not cause an assault on your body and many times smell better than the synthetic scents.

Discontinue Support for Dishonest Companies
Brands don’t have to disclose what “fragrance” means, maybe it’s just a few essential oils but more often than not it’s dozens or even hundreds of chemicals. Some of these can be harmful to our health and cause problems like reproductive issues or allergies. Supporting small businesses that are transparent as to what’s going into their products and the process behind it is beneficial for everyone. These small local businesses actually care about and are invested in the well-being of the community and have a smaller carbon footprint than larger companies. Small businesses are also more likely to utilize other local small businesses such as banks, service providers, and farms.

Reduce Toxins in the body
Toxins build up because our bodies don’t know how to absorb these foreign ingredients, so they continue to circulate and put a strain on our bodies, rather than becoming food and nourishment for our cells. It’s hard to believe but conventional beauty products can actually be one of the biggest contributors to our toxic load. It’s important to be conscious of the choices we can make and to avoid contributing to the toxic buildup in our bodies – with what we put on our plates and apply to our skin. Our bodies can handle occasional chemicals but when exposed consistently, disease and health conditions are more likely to occur.

Educate Yourself
The world of skincare is laden with conflicting information about what’s effective, what’s toxic, what’s a gimmick, and what’s not. How can you really know if you’re making the right choices? Resources like the Think Dirty’s Shop Clean App and EWG website are easy-to-use and can tell you the truth behind the products you’re currently using. Take a deeper look into what you’re putting on your skin, on your family’s skin, you might not love what you find out but it’s a great starting point in really caring for your skin and your whole self.
